Monterey Park, CA – Dr. Lisa Vartanian, Addiction Studies Program Director and Dr. Sherrie Davey, Psychology Department Chairperson, joined 30 of ELAC’s Formerly or Currently Incarcerated students (FOCIS) as they celebrated an important milestone, earning their Prevention Specialist or Recovery Specialist certificates.
Following Covid-19 district guidelines, Addiction Studies Department staff gathered at the main entrance along the ELAC steps and congratulated the graduates as they and their families drove by. Students were announced as they entered the steps area, were applauded by staff, faculty, and administrators along the way, received their certificate and a light dessert. The welcoming area was decorated with balloons and banners.
Emotions ran high for both graduates and ELAC staff and several students complimented Dr. Vartanian and her team for coordinating this memorable event. FOCIS students had previously served a total of 120+ years in prison and were excited about making this significant step towards a college degree.
